By: Jon Asslexiaha

Since the launching of the first Grand Theft Auto title, it has continued to reap success with its succeeding games and is recognized as one of the most popular gaming franchises in the industry. Plus, Grand Theft Auto has continued to step up a notch with each title released and redefining what video gaming is about. GTA certainly takes the lead in terms of the Sandbox genre, and everyone who has played it knows the reason for this. GTA4 is the 9th game off of the series and will continue on with where GTA 3 left off. But if you thought you know how the story will unfold, wait till you get to play this game as the series has been known to provide some interesting twists and turns with each game.

Although unique in their own way, each version of the series has been distinctly gripping and fantastic. However, with GTA 4, it aims to take the storyline to a whole new vantage point. With Niko (an ex-soldier trying to rebuild his life) as the main protagonist of the story, gamers will get the chance to partake in his struggle to survive in the hostile environment of Liberty City. However, Niko is built for this stuff, and he does not have trouble blending in and easily finds Liberty City a great place to explore. But unlike previous GTA characters, Niko has specific objectives to achieve and giving more weight into the overall gameplay experience. In past GTA games, characters can partake in rampages or other violent acts at will, but because Niko has missions to fulfill, your adventures are defined within that mission.

With Niko being the main focus of the story, this does not mean though that the other characters present in GTA 4 have no significance in the overall gameplay and storyline. For the most part, they will greatly impact the decisions Niko has to make in the game that involve a few characters and it will have repercussions in the game. Not only that, the relationships you form in this game is a vital element in the overall gameplay, as well as the decisions you have to make, which will require careful thought from you.

With Liberty City serving as the backdrop for the game, it should be pointed out that the game could have not looked any better. It should be interesting to know that the city provides a very interactive setting allowing you to have access to whichever part of the city; which is definitely a good thing, considering its intricate details.

But that is not all that Grand Theft Auto IV has to offer. It now sports elements that were either brand new, or much improved from past GTA games. The combat system is probably the best feature of GTA IV. There's definitely more excitement into the game with a few very efficient feature that gamers can use to their advantage. Although the free-aim feature might be a great way to practice your shooting skills, the lock-on feature still serves as a welcome addition for a sharper accuracy rate. By setting your aim on an opponent, you are sure to hit right where your aim is. You simply press a button and there goes your enemies, blasting off in Hi-Def. The cover system is also new to this game. To make your character take cover from the nearest suitable object, just press R1. This will enable your character to effectively cover from your enemies' view and is a great way to deal with an overwhelming number of enemies. What this new feature does is that you can minimize the any form of damage that can possibly get your character killed. With this new combat system in your arsenal, playing in GTA IV has become a much more rewarding experience.

If you though that was impressive, wait till you hear about GTA IV's new in-car combat system. GTA IV has definitely been made more exciting with this new combat system that promises to be just as effective as on-foot combat and yet a whole lot more exciting. Even when driving a vehicle, you can lock-on your nearest opponent. You still have the option for a free-aim though, it's basically your choice. If before, getting to shoot someone while you're driving proved to be quite a task, this time around everything is so much better. All these efforts of improving the game play mechanics is done to live up and even surpass fans' expectation of what GTA IV can deliver.

It is important to touch on the mission structure for GTA IV because it is one of the pillars of this particular game. Because the previous GTA's have been proven, this game carries on the winning formula. So, as you go through this game, you'd have to traverse the entire city in order to accomplish missions for certain characters, with each of these missions offering a unique experience for gamers. The missions in GTA IV are not just action-packed, there are more to expect from it especially in terms of novelty and intensity.

While in Liberty City, Roman's phone will be used by Niko and plays a key role in the game. This will serve as your control panel and will be a valuable tool for whatever that needs to be done in the game. You can use the phone to receive messages about certain missions, and may also serve as your main access to multiplayer features and anything you have to accomplish the progress in the game. Having to use the phone as a way to control the game is definitely innovative, and it creates this illusion that everything is happening within the world of the game, which is independent of the player's command.

Also, an exciting new addition to this new GTA game is the online multiplayer feature. This will enable you to share the wonderful experience of playing GTA IV with 15 other players and this will alter the way you have anticipated GTA IV to be. But more importantly, GTA IV is raring to knock off such great games like Call of Duty 4 or Rainbow Six Vegas off their reign and soon be named as the king of Multiplayer with a great new game modes addition.
